Is Self Testing The Key For Aging Drivers?

Are You Fit To Drive?

Australia asks residents, "Are you fit to drive?"
Yesterday, I wrote about starting the dialogue with aging family members about when it might be time to give up the car keys.

Today friends from Australia shared the recent policy changes after the removal of a mandatory medical testing for an older driver. Now Australians over age 75 with no previous medical conditions effecting their driving will be given a self-assessment  form to determine their ability to drive. The responsibility for choosing wisely falls squarely on the shoulders of the older driver. Link to the article: http://klou.tt/pvpfxe6w5ss7

Ongoing research confirms older drivers universally self-regulate their driving habits. These often fall into these three habits.

1. Decreasing night time driving.

2. Avoiding peak traffic times.

3. Limiting the distance of miles driven.

While these habits are motivated by an abundance of caution they can also lead to social isolation, missed business, and medical appointments. Ultimately they lead to a diminished quality of life. As an expert in transportation for seniors, my work is focused on providing solutions and ultimately delivering community programs to bridge the gap in services. This week the White House Conference On Aging is set to tackle issues of aging I'm hopeful they will start the dialog on the well-being of aging drivers.
